Arggh!
I can't think of a good framework to test the backbones I'm coming up with. In other words: I can't seem to make a fun game.
I can think of lots of ideas, but nothing small enough. Maybe my standards are too high.
I'll keep thinking.

I think I know which backbone you're tryint to test. I suggest a puzzle game (such as the crate puzzle, or a jumping puzzle) - a little guy hopping/running around a screen full of platforms/boxes.
No emotional attachment, but it would test the easy-path-gets-removed idea pretty well. Players with more lives left have fewer and fewer choices.
Hey now, that is a pretty solid idea. Lives = power. That was the key I needed!
